Dean Smith was determined to open doors. Just ask Charlie Scott, who said this almost 50 years after Coach Smith recruited him to be Carolina’s first black scholarship athlete:
“He showed me that there are individuals who have genuine concern about wanting me to succeed in life as an individual. That was the most important thing he could do.”
Such acts of courage and integrity, defying the tenor of the times, would earn Coach Smith the nation’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
This Special Edition of Carolina Connections Online highlights the immense impact Coach Smith had on UNC and ways the Opening Doors Fund will cement his legacy. Please enjoy this special issue to see how private giving is transforming the University’s work and its contributions to our community, the state, the nation and the world.
